The Fundamentals of Laser Cutting badge demonstrates that you have the basic skills needed to user laser cutters in the design spaces and makerspaces at UArizona.
To earn the Fundamentals of Laser Cutting badge, you will need to satisfy the following criteria:
- Complete theoretical and hands-on training to complete a project using a laser cutter.
- Independently setup and complete a project using the laser cutter.
For details of how to meet these criteria and earn your badge, see below.
There are two steps to the training for laser cutting.
- Complete the theoretical online training on laser cutting provided by CATalyst Studios
- Once you've finished the online training, sign up for a hands-on training on the laser cutter at CATalyst Studios. For upcoming training sessions, see CATalyst's training schedule.
For this step, you will need to select a design to cut using the laser cutter. You can choose a file you create yourself, or something you find from an online repository or tutorial. Next, head to the makerspace of your choice and utilize the laser cutter to create your design. You can use any material you choose that's allowed per makerspace guidance. Then, submit a short report of the project you created including the following information:
- Description of the part you created and details of how it was created (e.g., designed by you, downloaded from website, etc)
- Approximately 2 pictures of your completed parts
Upload your report as a PDF to this submission folder. Be sure to name your PDF with the following naming convention: LastName_FirstName_BadgeName_ENGR102bInstructorLastName.pdf (for example Doe_Jane_FundamentalsLaser_Salazar.pdf).
Once you've completed all necessary steps, you will be awarded your badge in your ENGR 102B D2L site. Badges will be awarded on the first of each month (e.g., Nov 1, Dec 1) and at the end of the semester. If you don't see your badge, please email bushra@arizona.edu for help.
See the Share badges page for information on adding your badge to your resume and LinkedIn.
